Great Things Up Ahead
Like the phases of the moon, my energy seems to wax and wane. Sometimes I’m barely a new moon, but right now I’m glowing and full. I’m knocking out the mundane tasks in my life, getting my ducks in a row, taking care of business and mixing all my metaphors, all with an eye on creating the space for Great Things Up Ahead (GTUA).
It’s a lot of work, creating GTUA, but it’ll be so satisfying! I’d been feeling like a potted plant stuck too long in the same container, root-bound and stagnant. But I’ve shimmied and shifted and tipped myself over, smashing the clay into smithereens and freeing my roots. I feel awkward lying here, without a protective vessel, but a certain magic enters the space where unnecessary debt, clutter and debris sit, hanging out with their cousins anxiety and chaos. I feel good.
Does this make any sense to you? It’s a positive thing and very natural, like the leaves dropping in the fall. (I expect Chauncey Gardner to come strolling through at any moment.) All of this leads to music, and that’s what it’s all about.
I escaped to Mendocino last month and spent four days hugging my thoughts beneath the redwoods, feeling rhythms and scribbling down chord progressions. I came up with 10 new songs (there are scribbled notes to prove it). Funny how the rain in the trees on a cloudy weekend can free your head.
Though these songs won’t become a record for a while, that is the goal. More specifically, I plan on releasing a bit, fat vinyl record with liner notes and large photos and a batch of songs that captures slices of this strange and fascinating place called life. Stay tuned.
Better yet, come see me play live. I’ll be around, as much as they’ll let me. Here’s where the fun starts.
